Get to Know Me

My name is Dove, and I'm a beautiful bay mare with distinctive star, strip, and snip markings on my face, along with white markings on three of my legs. I was born around January 2012 in California's Twin Peaks herd area, where I spent ten wonderful years living wild and free.

For a decade, the open range was my home. I knew the changing seasons, the freedom of wide-open spaces, and life among other wild horses.

But on July 27, 2022, when I was about ten and a half years old, my life changed when I was rounded up and removed from the land I called home.

The BLM identified me as #6955, but thanks to someone who cared enough to help give me another chance at freedom, I now have something much more special — a name of my own, Dove.

Now, at approximately fourteen years old, and after more than four years away from the range, I have the opportunity to experience freedom again at Rewilding America Now, where thousands of acres await and I'll have room to roam alongside other wild horses.

I spent ten precious years knowing what it meant to live wild. Those years will always be part of who I am. Although I cannot return to the life I once knew, thanks to the generosity of people who care, I have the chance for a wonderful new life with the open spaces and companionship that mean so much to a wild horse.

More of Dove's Journey

Ten Years of Freedom in California's Twin Peaks

Dove spent approximately ten years living wild in California's Twin Peaks herd area before her removal in July 2022.

Another horse on this Freedom Ride, #7038, also came from Twin Peaks and was rounded up just five days later, on August 1, 2022.

While we don't know whether they knew one another in the wild, they share a special connection to the same landscape. Now both have the opportunity to experience freedom again at Rewilding America Now.

Additional photographs of Dove's journey will be shared here.
